With your radio turned off, determine if your radio has a MALE or FEMALE SMA, by taking off your little rubber duck antenna.
Purchase a "pigtail", with either a MALE or FEMALE SMA connector on one end. This pigtail will have an SO-239 FEMALE UHF connector on the other end to connect to a long coax cable, which connects to a large antenna.
Your mobile radio may have a BNC connector needed. With this type of connector, you push and twist to lock it into place.
With just your hand-held radio and a pigtail to connect to a much larger antenna, you will be able to talk to our roving hams all over the valley, on Simplex. (No repeater needed!)
